Clementine and her twin sister, Valentine, are the children of the world renowned Merryweathers, of the Extremely Accurate and Complete Merryweather encyclopedia, generally agreed to be the foremost source of knowledge for any subject under the sun.
Even as a small child, Clementine was determined to live up to her parents’ legacy, and spent a great deal of time reading in the extensive bookbinders’ guild library near her house. (Although even she might have been somewhat less studious if not for the presence in the library of Melora, the sickly but incredibly charismatic daughter of a pair of guild artisans, whom Clementine had a huge crush on).
Clementine was always fascinated by magic, and studied many books of magic, trying to become a wizard. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the mind for it, and found most wizard spells to be impossibly complex and confusing. Frustrated, she turned her attention to other forms of magic, trying to learn everything there was to know about powerful magical beings. An experiment gone wrong accidentally attracted the attention of a fey lord, who tried to claim Clementine (who was 11 years old at the time) as a faerie slave, but Clem and her friends found a loophole and Clementine instead swore to serve him as a warlock when she reached adulthood. So far he hasn’t required anything from her, so for now Clementine enjoys her magical powers, trying not to obsess too hard over when the other shoe is going to drop.
When they reached adulthood, Clementine and Valentine knew they needed follow in their parents’ footsteps, and strove to make their mark on the academic world. They saw the opening of the new continent as an opportunity for fresh research, and a chance to make a name for themselves by founding the New Merryweather Encyclopaedia of Silanya. Having catalogued everything there is in the town of Sila, they are eager to get out beyond the wall and start work on the rest of the continent.
