Katan is the youngest of three brothers. The Argents own a manor and a moderately prosperous tree farm outside of the city of Meriko. Although they are metallic dragons (who tend to be upper crust), the Argents do not have as much social or political sway as they would wish. For many generations, the Argent family has sent any promising children to become paladins, in an attempt to increase the family’s notoriety and fortune.
Katan has always been overshadowed by his two older brothers, Hadar and Ezra. Hadar, being the eldest child and prodigal son, made it his duty to bring glory to the family name. Katan’s parents were always extremely proud of Hadar, in sharp contrast to Katan, who seemed to perpetually disappoint them. Wanting him to grow up to be the perfect vessel for the Argent name, Katan’s parents and Hadar were extremely controlling. Katan’s desire to be his own person resulted in frequent screaming matches throughout his childhood. Ezra, the middle child, mostly tried to avoid conflict.
When he was 5, Katan ran off into the grounds after a fight with his family, where two half-elf twins, Clementine and Valentine Merryweather, found him sniffling on a log, and tried to comfort him. Shocked to meet people who showed interest in him and valued his opinion, they became fast friends. Over the next three years, they got up to great mischief and adventures together.
This was too good to last. They betrayed and rejected him, causing him to leave for paladin school two years early, at the age of 8. Katan excelled at paladin training, and rebelled in his off hours, making trouble with a group of friends/followers from a nearby town.
When he returned from training, Katan was finally ready to bring glory to the family name on his own terms. However, his family had other plans. They had arranged his betrothal to a high class dragonborn from a more influential family. At the introductory dinner between the two families, Katan, tired of being controlled, made his objections known in the form of searing insults toward (in order) her family, her, his family, and the dragonborn community as a whole.
Seeing that his work as a paladin would never be good enough for his family, he decided to make his own way in the world, and moved into his brother Ezra’s house (Ezra being the only family member who had not pronounced him a lost cause).
Several months later, when Ezra got a contract from the Bellacuprica family to explore Silanya, Katan went with him (despite not being included in the contract). In Silanya, he intends to make a fortune for himself or die trying, either of which will finally highlight his true worth to his family back home.
