Character Creation

Character creation can mostly happen on your own time, but when you’re going to be rolling things either I need to be there or I can roll for you in the presence of another player. This is not because I think anyone would cheat, but because I expect that players will be in competition with one another, and in a campaign this big I want to keep everything visibly fair as well as actually fair.

If you want to roll your character yourself, go to this site: and send a roll to my email ( that includes both attribute rolls (rolls 7, dice 3d6, rolls per line 7), and a 5d4 roll for wealth. Only the first roll you send to my email counts, and please notify me before you roll.

Lastly, one of our players (Kate Manning) provided me with a bootleg copy of the PHB. So if you want to make your character, but don’t have access to one, ask me and I’ll send it to you. That way, we don’t have to spend in-game time working on characters.

To determine your character’s starting attributes, roll 3d6 7 times, and record the scores. Then, delete one of the values. The remaining six numbers will be, in order, your Strength (S), Dexterity (D), Constitution (C ), Intelligence (I), Wisdom (W), and Charisma (Ch).

For example, I rolled 11, 7, 12, 10, 10, 15, 11. I want to play a Cleric so I want to have high Wisdom, and I have a 15 that could end up there. So I delete the 7, leaving me with S 11, D12, C10, I10, W15, C11. If I wanted to play a Bard, I could delete the last 11 instead, leaving me with S11, D7, C12, I10, W10, Ch15. These stats are a little worse, but it means I can play a class that I prefer.

As another example, lets say I had 14, 10, 12, 14, 10, 8, 11. I want to play a strength-based character. If I want a Barbarian or a Fighter, I probably want high constitution and dexterity, and don’t really need intelligence or Wisdom. So I might drop the 10 (in position 2) and end up with S14, D12, C14, I10, W8, C11. That helps me get other good stats that compliment my choice of class.

Non-viable Characters
If the scores are too low and the character is not viable you can choose not to play the character. In that case, they die in the voyage or become an NPC in Sila and you roll a new one. Either way, you get a new set of rolls, but the advantage of making an NPC is that you get to add your adorable addition to the list of NPCs in the town of Sila. If you do, delete a score of your choice and add racial mods as normal.

A character is not viable if they have
A) A net negative bonus or
B) Less than +3 in positive bonuses
Both conditions are evaluated while looking at the 7 scores.

For example, if I roll 7, 12, 9, 11, 6, and 14, I do have a total of +3, but I also have -4, which is a net -1 and falls under rule A. If I rolled 8, 11, 10, 12, 12, 10 and 11 then I have a net positive bonus of +1, but only +2 in positive bonuses, which means that I can have my character be not viable under rule B.

Class and Species
There are no stat restrictions on what class you can play or what species you choose. All classes and species in the PHB are in my campaign.

Please note that if you want to play a ranger, I’m using a slightly buffed version [link].

If you want to / are playing a circle of the moon druid, please note the following rules for wildshape:

You have two kinds of wildshape: lesser wildshape, where you transform into a creature with a CR accessible from the base druid class, or greater wildshape, where you transform into a higher CR creature accessible through your circle of the moon. An expended wildshape slot refreshes at a rate depending on which power of wildshape you used: lesser recharges on a short rest, and greater recharges on a long rest. [So basically, you can use a bunch of lessers with short rests in between, but once you use a greater that slot is gone until you sleep for the night].

(As written, druids at level 2 have the equivalent of 70hp/short rest, and match fighters for damage, on top of full spell-casting ability. These rules are meant to reduce the degree of brokenness.)

All feats are available to a first level character if you are playing a variant human, except for lucky which is a silly feat and I won’t be using it.

Starting Equipment
Players start with a small amount of equipment. You will have your primary weapon if you are a martial character, a spellbook if you are a wizard, and an arcane focus if you are another spell-caster. You then roll 5d4 *6 gp to purchase additional equipment. This will go pretty quickly if you need a secondary weapon, and even faster if you’re buying halfway decent armour. All of these costs can be found in the PHB. Anything you need and don’t have you will rent from the adventurers’ guild. Later on you can obtain it for gold that you have earned, or by finding it on your adventures.

Here’s a list of basic equipment that you need to go out at all. Camping supplies and the like.

Alternatively if your new character can’t afford a piece of equipment they need, they can ask the Leshanna Memorial Fund for Adventurer Greatness for help [ask James M or Del about it]. The Fund will either loan them the gold (interest-free) or just straight-up buy whatever it is they need. (This especially applies to more expensive armour options, so don’t buy crappy armour just because you think you can’t afford the good stuff).
